Man accused of stealing car, then truck and fleeing deputy

HUDSON — A 28-year-old man is accused of stealing a car Monday from a Dunkin' Donuts near the Suncoast Parkway, dumping the car after it ran out of gas, then peeling out of a 7-Eleven the next day in another stolen vehicle, authorities said.

After learning the truck leaving the convenience store parking lot about 4 a.m. Tuesday was stolen, a deputy followed Joseph Nils Lucas down Key Lime Drive, according to a report from the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

Lucas made several turns and ended up driving down Wonder Avenue and into a lake, the report said.

Lucas ran out of the car and away from the deputy. A police dog found him hiding in the woods, the report said.

Lucas was arrested on charges of grand theft of a vehicle and fleeing to elude a law enforcement officer. He was taken to Land O'Lakes jail, where he remained Tuesday in lieu of a $9,000 bail.
