Man accused of stealing painkillers found in Tampa pharmacy's ceiling

TAMPA — A man apparently trying to steal oxycodone from a Tampa pharmacy was found hiding in the ceiling after the business' alarm went off, according to sheriff's deputies.

This is what the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says happened:

A 39-year-old man, as yet unnamed, tried to get into the Rite RX Pharmacy, 7520 W Waters Ave., by prying open the business' back door. When that didn't work, he climbed to the roof and entered through a vent.

Once he got inside, the man realized he had entered the wrong business — Otero Insurance Group, next door to the pharmacy. He climbed back into the ceiling and entered the pharmacy, where he grabbed some oxycodone, an addictive painkiller.

Deputies were called to the scene when an alarm sounded. They arrived around 6:30 a.m. and found a window that appeared to have been broken from inside the business.

Deputy Chris Greco and a sheriff's dog entered the store. The dog found the man hiding in the ceiling. When he surrendered, deputies noticed that his wrist was lacerated, apparently from an attempt to leave the pharmacy by breaking through the window.

Deputies stopped the bleeding until paramedics arrived. The man was taken to Tampa General Hospital.
