Man arrested in Gibsonton laundromat robbery

GIBSONTON — A 20-year-old man authorities identified as a gang member was arrested Wednesday on charges he robbed a man at knifepoint in a Gibsonton laundromat.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Hipolito M. Varona of Gibsonton was identified as the suspect in Monday afternoon's robbery.

Authorities said he attacked Richard Crone Jr., 75, from behind at the laundromat at 11024 U.S. 41, then forced Crone to the ground and stole money.

Surveillance video showed the assailant at a convenience store before the crime, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office said Varona is a member of the Sur 13 gang and faces charges of armed robbery, false imprisonment and battery on a person 65 or older. He was being held without bail.
