Man charged with murder after allegedly strangling girlfriend during sex

ST. PETERSBURG — A day after a man told police he had accidentally choked his girlfriend to death while they were having sex in a hotel bedroom, St. Petersburg police have elevated the charge against him to second-degree murder.

Scott Greenberg, 27, and Jennifer Zale, 26, had been living together for two weeks at the Kenwood Inn Hotel on 34th Street N. He called 911 Tuesday, eight hours after he allegedly strangled her. Greenberg insisted to investigators that the couple was having consensual sex that went too far.

Greenberg was initially charged with manslaughter. But the autopsy, according to police, showed she had been subjected to "continuous and intentional homicide violence." According to authorities, Zale had bruises on her throat and skull and a broken bone in her neck.

Also, police said, toilet paper had been stuffed down her mouth.
