Man taken for mental evaluation after claiming to have a gun on PSTA bus

ST. PETERSBURG — A man claiming to have a gun on a PSTA bus Wednesday morning was taken to a local hospital for mental evaluation.

Passengers heard the man muttering incoherent statements, threatening to kill himself and others, Pinellas County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Cecilia Baretta said. Passengers didn't see a gun, and deputies said no weapon was found on the bus.

The bus was on 49th Street near 54th Avenue N when the incident happened, officials said.

No one was hurt. Deputies got to the bus about 11 a.m. and were clearing the scene about a half-hour later.

Additional information was not immediately available.
