Man injured in shooting at Clearwater Economy Inn

CLEARWATER — A 25-year-old man was hospitalized after being shot early Thursday at a Clearwater hotel, police said.

At about 4:40 a.m., Drayton J. Bonney was in room 37 with a woman at the Economy Inn at 1274 Cleveland St., according to city spokeswoman Joelle Castelli.

Another man and woman arrived at the room, and sometime after that, Bonney was shot. The man and woman fled. Police have not determined what occurred in the hotel room, or what the motive was for the shooting, Castelli said. They think the man and woman were acquainted with Bonney.

Bonney was recovering at Bayfront Medical Center, a dispatcher said. Police would not describe his injuries.

Pinellas County Sheriff's detectives were investigating.
