NEW PORT RICHEY — The man who died earlier this month after exchanging gunfire with Pasco deputies was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner has determined.
Deputies went to question Christos P. Marangos on the evening of Aug. 6 about a rash of burglaries when he opened fire on them, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said. The deputies returned fire, and Marangos retreated into another room of the mobile home at 5702 Columbia Drive in Sunshine Park.
A SWAT unit arrived around 7:15 p.m. Marangos, 30, was found dead in the other room. Authorities originally thought he was killed by a deputy's bullet, but the autopsy concluded he took his own life.
Marangos' previous convictions included burglary, carjacking with a deadly weapon and cocaine trafficking. Neighbors said drug users were coming and going from the mobile home where Marangos had been squatting.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Sheriff's Office are still investigating the incident.
