BAYPORT — Deputies are investigating the death of a man whose body was discovered by joggers Wednesday morning at a remote fishing spot — a death that might have been a suicide, authorities said.
The man was slumped over in a white Mazda sport utility vehicle on Bayou Drive, just off Pine Island Drive, when the joggers noticed him and called authorities at 9:45 a.m., according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.
The vehicle was along a narrow road where people typically fish and watch sunsets. Bayou Drive is lined with palm trees and runs through a salt marsh.
According to the Sheriff's Office, detectives were withholding identification of the man Wednesday evening, pending a fingerprint comparison.
Authorities did not say how the man died.
"The case could be reclassified to a suicide," said Sgt. Donna Black, a spokeswoman with the Sheriff's Office. "We don't want the public frozen in fear when there might be no need for that."
