ST. PETERSBURG — Two men were hospitalized early Friday after a crash involving a bicycle and a motorcycle, police said.

The crash was reported about 12:30 a.m. at First Avenue N and Seventh Street.

Jason Peter Smith, 40, was headed south on Seventh Street on a bicycle and approached the intersection as a motorcycle driven by Thomas Lepka, 44, was headed west on First Avenue N.

Smith failed to yield at a stop sign, entered the intersection and rode into the path of the motorcycle, St. Petersburg police said.

Lepka and Smith were both thrown onto the street by the impact.

Both men were taken to Bayfront Medical Center. Lepka, who was wearing a helmet, sustained what appeared to be minor injuries. Smith did not wear a helmet and was listed in critical condition early Friday.

An investigation remained under way Friday.
