Midnight snack attack lands Pasco man behind bars

HUDSON — It was just after midnight Thursday, authorities say, when Gilbert Smith shattered the front door at A-1 Discount Beverages to help himself to some snacks.

Smith, a regular customer, stepped over the shattered glass and walked toward the ice cream cooler in the convenience store at 13508 Hicks Road, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

The 46-year-old took some Skittles, Kit Kats and Snickers, along with regular cookies and ice cream, said one of the store owners, Mukesh Amin.

The break-in was captured on the store's surveillance cameras. Smith fled into the woods, deputies said, and was arrested when he returned to the store a short time later.

He was charged with burglary and taken to Land O'Lakes jail, where he remained without bail Friday on an unrelated contempt of court charge pertaining to child support.

"He stole about $10 (of snacks) and caused $250 worth of damage," Amin lamented. "I wish he would have stolen more stuff for all the trouble."
