TAMPA — A judge denied bail Sunday morning for a man accused of stabbing his 6-year-old son more than 20 times on New Year's Eve.
Xavier Dequan Thomas Sr., 23, is charged with attempted murder.
Deputies say Thomas took his son aside at an apartment complex after setting off fireworks with relatives and stabbed him repeatedly. He then threw the bloody child over a 6-foot fence into a wooded area and returned to the party as if nothing had happened, deputies said.
Thomas, of Tampa, was arrested early Saturday morning. Family members say he is mentally ill.
The boy, Xavier Jr., survived wounds to the back, chest, neck and arms. His liver was lacerated, but the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, a detective wrote in an arrest affidavit.
On Sunday afternoon, the boy was in serious but stable condition at St. Joseph's Hospital.
