NEW PORT RICHEY — A former office manager for West Coast Surgical Associates is accused of stealing $25,155 by giving herself extra paychecks and bonuses.

Marty T. Glass, 53, of Wesley Chapel, told authorities she "took the money because she needed it," according to a report from the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. She was arrested Thursday and charged with scheme to defraud.

Reached by phone Friday, Glass said her husband has been out of work and she is the sole supporter of six people in her house — her daughter, niece and other relatives.

"I've never been arrested before," she said.

She didn't want to say more.

"Things have been rough enough as it is," she said.

Glass was in charge of payroll for the surgical centers from June 2008 through January, according to the Sheriff's Office.

A report said her monthly salary was $4,230; between April and December 2009, she gave herself seven bonus checks and five extra payroll checks. An accountant noticed the missing money and a surgeon at the practice questioned Glass on Jan. 26. Glass admitted the thefts, the report states, and she was fired that day.

She was arrested Thursday, and released hours later from the Pasco County jail on $10,000 bail.
