Pasco deputies discover 40 abandoned animals inside home

Pasco County sheriff's deputies are trying to find out who abandoned more than 40 dogs, cats, rabbits, a snake and a lizard in a home at 1011 Hiawatha Place in Holiday.

The animals were found after a neighbor phoned authorities about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday complaining of a strong odor coming from the home and numerous flies on the windows, officials said.

A deputy arrived and found the animals, which appeared to have been left unattended for up to a week, officials said. Animal feces was also scattered throughout the home.

Animal control officers were working late Wednesday to remove the animals, many of which appeared emaciated, deputies said. Meanwhile, deputies were trying to figure out who last lived there.

An investigation was ongoing and no other information was released.
