Pasco deputies: Girl, 3, beaten after failing to spell her name

ZEPHYRHILLS – Deputies arrested a 27-year-old man after, they say, he used a belt to beat a little girl when she couldn't spell her own name. She is 3 years old.

The girl and two siblings, ages 6 and 8, were in the care of Timothy Lee Rogers on Saturday afternoon when the beating happened at Rogers' home, 36243 Lake Chase Blvd., according to Pasco County Sheriff's Office reports.

The 8-year-old brother told deputies he heard Rogers yelling at the girl, whose name was not released, then heard slapping and screaming, the report states. On Sunday, girl's mother showed deputies the bruises and welts on the back of the child's legs, the report states.

Questioned by deputies, Rogers said he was teaching the girl how to spell her name but "denied physically disciplining the victim at any point," the report states.

Rogers was arrested about 1 a.m. Monday on a charge of child abuse. He was released from the Land O'Lakes jail after posting $5,000 bail.
