Pasco inmate runs away during hospital stay

DADE CITY — County jail inmate Juan Lopez was at Bayfront Health Dade City on Thursday getting treated for unspecified injuries. It was before noon, and Lopez, 30, had been locked up for nonpayment of child support and driving on a suspended license. The total bail for the charges was $2,026.

According to an arrest report, Lopez asked the security guard watching him to get him some juice. The guard agreed and stepped out of the room. Lopez, who lives on Punch Road, saw his chance. He slipped out of his handcuffs, jumped out a window and ran until he got into some woods behind the hospital. The security guard returned to an open window.

Lopez hid in the woods. When he saw an Pasco County Sheriff's deputy, he lay on the ground and surrendered, according to the report. He was arrested and charged with escape, which carries a bail of $10,000.
