NEW PORT RICHEY — A 46-year-old woman is accused of stealing nearly $60,000 from an 82-year-old in a nursing home and renting out the woman's house without her knowledge, according to the New Port Richey Police Department.
Beverly Widdiss "gained the trust and confidence of the victim" and forged the woman's checks from March 2009 until last month, the report said. The checks totaled $57,906.40 and went to pay for Widdiss' personal expenses, the report said.
The elderly woman, whose name has been withheld due to the nature of the allegations, has been in a nursing home since September. It is unclear how she came to know Widdiss.
Widdiss is also accused of renting out the woman's home for $1,000 a month to a Canadian couple. That adds another $2,000 to the total, making it a loss of $59,906.40 for the victim, the report said.
Widdiss, of 3608 Murrow St. in the Seven Springs area, was arrested Tuesday and charged with exploitation of the elderly and scheme to defraud. She was released that same day on $20,000 bail.
