Pinellas County Sheriff's Office warning residents of phone scam

LARGO — Deputies received three reports about a phone scam during the weekend involving a caller claiming to be law enforcement, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

According to detectives, the caller, who identifies himself as Lt. John Roberts, tells victims they have an outstanding warrant for failing to appear for jury duty and then attempts to collect as much as $800 in alleged fines by telling them to purchase prepaid cards, deputies said.

The caller tells the victims that if they don't send him the money, he will arrest them, the Sheriff's Office said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the economic crimes unit at (727) 582-6200.
