Pinellas deputy suspended over DUI charge

LARGO — A 19-year veteran at the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office was demoted from corporal to deputy and received a 56-hour suspension this month for his arrest on a DUI charge in October, records show.

On Oct. 24, Chester Wolcott Johnson was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Armenia Avenue near Interstate 275 when he struck a car, Tampa police said after his arrest. The other driver sustained minor injuries.

Johnson's blood alcohol level measured .20. The state assumes impairment at .08. He was booked into the Hillsborough County jail and was released hours later on $500 bail.

Johnson's arrest "brought discredit to the Sheriff's Office," internal affairs records state.
