Pinellas jail inmate tries to escape through ceiling, authorities say

LARGO — Authorities have charged an inmate with trying to escape from the Pinellas County jail.

Largo police on Sunday arrested Ryan P. MacInnis, 26, on several charges, including battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence and loitering and prowling. He also was arrested on a fugitive burglary warrant from Connecticut.

Shortly after he arrived at the jail, officials placed him in a cell reserved for uncooperative and impaired inmates, Pinellas sheriff's officials said.

Once inside, officials said, MacInnis covered a surveillance camera lens with wet toilet paper, stood on the toilet and climbed up in an enclosed ceiling compartment for water pipes and air conditioning conduit.

Deputies ordered him down and added a charge of attempted escape. MacInnis denied he was trying to escape, officials said.
