Police arrest suspect in violent Clearwater home invasion

CLEARWATER — Police on Wednesday arrested one man they say was involved in a violent home invasion that occurred earlier in the day.

Police said Mariano McCauley and another man barged into a home at 1209 Grantwood Ave. around 11 a.m. Wednesday, shot one man and pistol-whipped another. The other assailant, whom police have not identified, has not been located.

Dominic Daniels, 26, was shot in the leg, and Marco Conley, 19, was hit repeatedly in the head.

McCauley, 19 , is accused of hitting Conley in the head with a pistol and demanding money from him while the other gunman searched the room. Daniels interrupted the robbery and was shot twice as he struggled with the two attackers, according to police.

According to the arrest report, Conley recognized McCauley and was able to identify him to police. The report does not say whether Daniels was shot by McCauley or the other man.

McCauley was arrested when police found him hiding in a back yard at 1016 Jade Ave. on Wednesday night. On Thursday, police were still searching for the other suspect, according to Clearwater police spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts.

Also on Wednesday, Clearwater police arrested Daniels, the shooting victim, on charges of fleeing and eluding, possession of cocaine and driving on a suspended or revoked license, stemming from a November traffic incident. Daniels was arrested at Mease Countryside Hospital, where he was being treated. On Thursday evening, Daniels was still in the hospital and listed in fair condition, according to hospital spokeswoman Beth Hardy.

Police said Daniels failed to stop for police in November when they tried to pull him over on a routine traffic stop. Daniels fled to a nearby parking lot and ran from the vehicle, dropping a bag with 3 grams of crack cocaine in the process, according to police.
