Police identify St. Petersburg transient beaten to death with baseball bat

ST. PETERSBURG — The man who was beaten to death last week was identified Monday as Daryl Ralph Harper, a 52-year-old transient who had been staying in a garage behind an apartment building at 364 Eighth St. N. Harper lived there with his friend, Michael James Osentoski, who is now faces a second-degree murder charge in Harper's death. Early Friday morning, police said the two argued about cigarettes and beer. During the argument, Osentoski, 45, used a baseball bat to beat his friend, who he claimed made a disparaging remark about Osentoski's mother, police said. Osentoski initially told police that he came home and found his roommate dead, police said he later confessed to the killing after being questioned.
