Deputies say man terrorized, threatened to kill woman in her home

SPRING HILL — Richard Ulrich had a grudge, empty pockets and an urge to get out of Florida, authorities say.

So on Monday afternoon, the 53-year-old Spring Hill man armed himself with a large stick, gained entry to a woman's home on English Elm Circle and threatened to kill her, according to a Hernando Sheriff's Office news release. The woman had fired Ulrich from a job a few years earlier, the release said.

But Ulrich also told the woman he needed money to leave the state, the Sheriff's Office said. He kept her in the home's Florida room, poking her with the stick and threatening her, investigators say. The woman later told detectives she feared for her life.

Hoping to get Ulrich to leave, the woman gave him $18 she had in her purse. He said it wasn't enough, and she convinced him they would need to go to an ATM for more cash. When they got outside the house, the woman ran to a neighbor's house and Ulrich fled the scene.

Deputies tracked him down to his parents' house on Colchester Road, where he was arrested.

Ulrich told investigators that he had been drinking at a local bar and decided to go to the woman's house and "intimidate the victim and scare her for firing him," the Sheriff's Office said.

The report did not make clear what type of work Ulrich did for the woman, who was not identified.

Ulrich admitted to having a stick in his hand, but denied threatening to kill the woman. He said he could not remember taking money from her.

Charged with home invasion robbery and false imprisonment, Ulrich remained in the Hernando County Detention Center on Wednesday in lieu of $100,000 bail, records show.

According to state records, Ulrich has previously been arrested on charges of aggravated battery, criminal mischief and theft, among others. He has been convicted of drug possession and driving under the influence three or more times within 10 years.
