St. Petersburg mom encouraged teen to fight, police say

ST. PETERSBURG — The grainy video, shot on a cellphone, shows Tawanda Sheffield's 14-year-old daughter struggling with another 14-year-old, pulling her hair as they fight in the grass at Booker Creek Park.

When Sheffield, 31, of St. Petersburg arrived Sunday afternoon, she didn't try to break up the fight, St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz said.

In fact, Puetz said, she encouraged the girl to keep fighting.

Sheffield was arrested a few hours later on a charge of child abuse after another bystander showed the video to police.

Sheffield was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on Sunday and released early Monday on $5,000 bail.
