Police: Tarpon man steals loaded gun, robs convenience store

TARPON SPRINGS — A Tarpon Springs man was arrested Tuesday after police said he stole a loaded gun from a Jeep SUV and used it to rob a convenience store.

Derek Leroy Thomas, 22, faces charges of armed burglary, felon in possession of a firearm, and robbery with a deadly weapon.

Early Tuesday, Thomas got into a Jeep parked at 311 South Pinellas Ave. and stole a loaded .38 caliber revolver from the center console, Tarpon Springs police said.

Police said he then walked into the EZ Stop and Shop at 23 South Walton Ave., pointed it at the clerk and said, "Give me everything you have." He fired it twice and laughed, a police report said. He then stole G-man socks, Jack Links beef jerky and three Swisher Sweet cigars.

Thomas was convicted two years ago of robbery by sudden snatching. He remained Wednesday in the Pinellas County Jail with bail set to $50,000.
