Police: Thursday's Clearwater bomb threat appears to be hoax

CLEARWATER – A suspicious device that was found on the Clearwater campus of St. Petersburg College Thursday appears to have been a hoax, police said.

Two buildings were evacuated Thursday afternoon after a campus security officer found the device on the college's south parking lot, 2465 Drew St. The bomb squad blew up the bag after the officer saw a device with a red flashing light inside, police said.

The bag had no explosives and it didn't pose a threat, police said. Specific details about the bag won't be released because police said it is an ongoing investigation.

Detectives are investigating who left the bag in the parking lot. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Clearwater Police Department.
