Two road workers injured in Tampa hit-and-run

TAMPA — Two workers who were painting a crosswalk on S Dale Mabry Highway were injured Tuesday morning by a vehicle that fled the scene, police said.

The employees of Stripe-A-Lot Paving, a subcontractor for the city, were using a machine early Tuesday to paint the crosswalk at S Dale Mabry and W San Carlos Street. Before 5 a.m., a silver 4-door Mitsubishi heading south on Dale Mabry veered off the road, over a curb and slammed into the workers, police said.

A third worker, who saw the crash, chased after the Mitsubishi until it turned west on Palmira Avenue, authorities said. The worker lost sight of the car, but not before he was able to get a partial tag number.

Police were looking early Tuesday for the driver of a car.

The injured workers were Michael Madson, 48, of Largo and Craig Walls of Illinois, police said. Madson was taken to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of what police described as "bumps and bruises." Walls was treated at the scene and released.

Anyone with information about the driver's identity is asked to call Tampa police at (813) 231-6130.
