BARTOW — A Polk County man accused of killing his aunt and stabbing his father has been found dead in his jail cell.

Polk County Sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Horstman said in a news release that Pedro Vega Jr. was found hanging from a sheet in his isolation cell on Sunday evening.

He was accused of stabbing 59-year-old Rosa Vega 14 times on Aug. 30. Authorities say he also stabbed his father 23 times before breaking into his estranged wife's home. He was arrested a short time later.

Deputies performed CPR on Vega, who was unresponsive when he was found. Investigators found two plastic spoons with sharpened ends in Vega's cell. They say he used them the torn ends of a bedsheet into small openings in an air return vent, where they were tied.
