Riverview man accused of shooting worker in apartment gate dispute

Wellesley Walker, 43

TAMPA — A dispute over a closed gate to an apartment complex ended when a man shot a maintenance worker just as a police officer drove by Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Wellesley Walker, 43, of Riverview, faces a charge of aggravated battery with a firearm after the incident, which started about 1:45 p.m. as he drove up to the Sanctuary at Highland Oaks apartments at 10246 Douglas Oak Circle. Employee Idalberto Fleites-Gonzalez, 34, of Tampa, was repairing a security gate and told Walker to use another entrance, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Walker argued with Fleites-Gonzalez, brandished a .40 caliber handgun, then shot Fleites-Gonzalez in the right hand, the Sheriff's Office said. A Tampa officer who was leaving the complex as the shooting happened pulled over and detained Walker.

Fleites-Gonzalez was taken to Brandon Regional Hospital in good condition.
