A 26-year-old man who was shot during a gunfight with deputies last month died Sunday morning, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Jamil Alejandro Valladares of Riverview was taken to the hospital on June 26 after a confrontation with two deputies who were investigating a domestic dispute reported by his girlfriend.

Deputies Austin O'Neill and Joshua Berrios responded to the apartment the couple shared at 9525 Grovedale Circle in Riverview after the 24-year-old woman reported that Valladares pulled her hair and ripped her robe during an argument, deputies said.

While they were interviewing her, the woman's mother told the deputies she saw Valladares in the parking lot. O'Neill, 26, and Berrios, 29, went outside and spotted him in front of his 2000 Mercury Mountaineer.

Valladares backed away and became verbally aggressive as the deputies approached him. He then pulled out a Smith & Wesson .40-claiber handgun from his pocket and raised it up, according to the Sheriff's Office.

O'Neill and Berrios drew their guns and shot Valladares multiple times. At some point during the argument, Valladares fired two rounds, although it is unclear when. Investigators found two spent shell casings on the scene near his gun.

The deputies were not hurt. They were placed on routine administrative leave while authorities investigate the shooting.
