RIVERVIEW — A 15-year-old Riverview boy got facial burns after what appeared to be homemade fireworks detonated Tuesday near his family's mailbox, Hillsborough sheriff's deputies said.

John C. Jacobi III of 11562 Wellman Drive went out to check the mail at 3 p.m. and then heard a noise, said Debbie Carter, a spokeswoman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

After hearing the noise, he turned around and something blew up in his face, Carter said. He said he then saw two people dressed in black ride by on bicycles.

"He turned around and there was an explosion," Carter said. The device blew up in his face, he told deputies.

Jacobi was taken to Tampa General Hospital and treated for his injuries.
