TAMPA — A robbery suspect shot by a Tampa police officer last week died Wednesday at Tampa General Hospital after he was taken off life support.
John C. Carr, 20, had been hospitalized for more than a week following the Oct. 12 shooting.
Police say Carr, who was on probation for a 2011 armed robbery conviction, accosted a man and woman early that morning at the Tampa Park Apartments, 1015 Lily White Court. He demanded money at gunpoint. The woman fled and called 911.
Minutes later, Officer Ronald Neipert arrived and spotted Carr, who fired two shots toward Neipert's car, police said. Neipert chased Carr, yelling for him to drop the gun. Carr turned and pointed the weapon again, police said, prompting Neipert to fire at least one shot.
Neipert, a patrol officer for six years, remains on paid leave while the police department and Hillsborough State Attorney's Office review the shooting.
