Safety Harbor man dies in crash near Westfield Countryside mall

A Safety Harbor man died Friday night after he tried to turn left into Westfield Countryside mall and hit another car, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Rafael De Jesus Bande, 82, was driving west on Main Street in Clearwater around 7 p.m.

Cassidy E. George, 24, of Clearwater was driving a Hyundai Sonata east on the same road with a passenger, Samuel L. Woodward, 20, also of Clearwater.

De Jesus Bande tried to turn left on to Summerdale Drive and crashed into the Sonata. The impact threw his car around and into another car that had stopped to make a left turn at the intersection.

De Jesus Bande was taken to Mease Dunedin Hospital, where he later died. George and Woodward were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital but did not have serious injuries. The driver and passenger of the third car were not injured.
