Seffner man with gun shot by Hillsborough deputies

SEFFNER — Deputies trying to talk a man out of killing himself shot him Sunday after he pointed his gun toward one of them, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said they arrived at 6:13 p.m. at the Paradise Village Mobile Home Park at 9305 Victoria Lane to find the man, identified as Craig Douglas Vilsack, 54, seated on his porch holding a gun and drinking alcohol.

A resident had alerted authorities, saying Vilsack was pointing the gun at his head.

Deputies said they tried to build a rapport with Vilsack to gain his trust. He sat for 30 minutes talking with deputies, but then began to pace and wave the gun, the Sheriff's Office said.

A deputy standing at one side of the home asked him to put down the gun, but he pointed it toward the deputy, at which point four deputies opened fire, the Sheriff's Office said.

Vilsack was transported to a hospital. None of the deputies were injured.

The Sheriff's Office identified the four as Sgt. Teddy Lynn, 48, and Deputies Katherine Gabel, 27, Jeremy Goff, 25, and William Irwin, 27. They will be placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

  5. Bucs top Jaguars behind strong first half

There is a reason why the air in Tampa Bay is filled with playoff talk. If Thursday night's 12-8 Bucs preseason win over the Jaguars is any indication, it's also going to be filled with footballs thrown by quarterback Jameis Winston.

Doug Martin gets the Bucs’ only touchdown on a 2-yard run, squeaking past linebacker Telvin Smith in the first quarter. He has five carries for 30 yards.
