A 38-year-old Spring Hill man was arrested Saturday morning and charged with attempted murder after eluding Hernando County sheriff's deputies for 17 hours.
Deputies say they responded to calls about a shooting Friday evening and found Derick Vassar on the front lawn of his Spring Hill Drive home with a gunshot wound to the back. Deputies found Vassar, 34, on his front lawn on Spring Hill Drive. He was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries at a trauma center.
Witnesses said the accused shooter, Bonnel Azemar, left the scene in a Dodge truck. Numerous deputies searched for Azemar Friday night and Saturday morning before arresting him at 10 a.m. at his girlfriend's house in Brooksville.
Detectives charged Azemar, of Spring Hill, with attempted murder with a firearm and aggravated assault with a firearm. He was being held without bond Saturday night at the Hernando County Detention Center. It is unclear what led to the shooting.
