Spring Hill man charged with battery on school crossing guard

SPRING HILL

Man arrested after crossing guard is hit

A 43-year-old Spring Hill man was arrested Thursday after he hit a crossing guard who stopped him in a school zone, authorities say.

The guard, Sonny Isabelle, was helping parents and children cross Mariner Boulevard near Spring Hill Elementary School when he saw Timothy E. Ruth's silver van traveling above the posted speed limit of 15 mph, the Hernando Sheriff's Office said. Isabelle stopped the van, but Ruth got out shouting expletives, hit him, then drove away.

Ruth was taken to the Hernando County Detention Center and booked on a charge of felony battery on a person 65 years or older. He was released Friday after posting $5,000 bail, records show.

Hernando court records show Ruth was arrested last year on a battery charge that was later dropped.
