Spring Hill nurse arrested on drug charges

SPRING HILL — A registered nurse at Oak Hill Hospital was arrested on drug charges Saturday after Hernando authorities found vials of morphine and antianxiety medication in his bedroom closet.

Billy E. Leonardo, 32, of Bradford Street in Spring Hill, faces four counts of possession of morphine and one count of possession of Lorazepam, according to a Hernando County Sheriff Office report. Investigators contacted Leonardo after receiving a tip from his housemate. Leonardo gave investigators permission to search his bedroom closet, where they found four 10mg bottles of morphine, one 2mg vial of Lorazepam, roughly 100 syringes and pain medication packaged for hospital use, the report shows.

Leonardo told investigators he got the morphine and Lorazepam from Oak Hill's emergency room, but that could not be confirmed, said Sgt. Donna Black, spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office. Leonardo is a traveling nurse contracted to work for Oak Hill, Black said. He was released Saturday on $10,000 bail.
