BROOKSVILLE -- A Hernando sheriff's deputy was placed on administrative leave with pay Wednesday after he was charged with battery against his live-in girlfriend.
Deputy Tommy Harris, 42, who works as a school resource officer at Springstead High School, was booked into the Hernando County Jail on Wednesday. He was released later in the day after posting a $50 bail.
Harris allegedly pushed his girlfriend to the floor during an argument at their home on
Jan. 20, according to Brooksville Police. The case was referred to the State Attorney's Office because of a lack of physical evidence or independent witnesses. Prosecutors decided to file charges Wednesday.
Harris has worked at the Sheriff's Office since November 1986. Sgt. Donna Black, a spokeswoman with the Sheriff's Office, declined comment.
