St. Pete police: Woman stole money from PTA while working as vice president

ST. PETERSBURG — A woman who was vice president of Woodlawn Elementary School's Parent Teacher Association was arrested Thursday and accused of stealing $385 from the group.

Twanya Laverna McGill-Lewis, 44, was arrested on a charge of grand theft. She had been placed in charge of the finances of a fundraiser and instead of paying a company for merchandise, she used the money for herself, an arrest report states.

McGill-Lewis had promised to pay back the money by Feb. 11, but did not pay it back and avoided attempts to contact her, St. Petersburg police said.

The grand theft charge was lodged against her Thursday about six hours after she was arrested on unrelated domestic battery charges. She was being held at the Pinellas County Jail Friday night in lieu of $4,000 bail.
