ST. PETERSBURG — A 77-year-old man was shot in the thigh while struggling with a would-be robber on Monday afternoon, according to St. Petersburg police.
The homeowner had just arrived at his home in the 3600 block of Fifth Avenue S about 2 p.m. when an armed man confronted him in the garage, police said. The gunman demanded money. The homeowner said he didn't have any on him, but said it was in the house. As he led him inside, police said, the homeowner threw a punch at the gunman and pushed the gun away.
The gunman then shot the homeowner in the right thigh and fled, police said. The homeowner asked his wife to drive him to Bayfront Medical Center.
Hospitals have to report every gunshot wound they treat, so Bayfront called police at 2:44 p.m. Police questioned the homeowner, who they said did not suffer a life-threatening injury, and are still looking for the suspect.
