St. Petersburg man dies in Gulfport crash

GULFPORT — A 78-year-old St. Petersburg man was killed in a traffic accident Saturday afternoon on Gulfport Boulevard, authorities said.

John Smith, who lived on Dolphin Boulevard S, was pronounced dead Saturday evening at Bayfront Medical Center.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office gave the following account of the crash:

Shortly before noon, Smith was driving a Ford van westbound on Gulfport Boulevard when he tried to make a left turn onto 64th Street S.

His van was hit by a Lexus driven by Helen Rance, 28, of Gulfport, who had been driving eastbound on Gulfport Boulevard.

Rance and her passenger, 49-year-old Deborah Shorter of Gulfport, were also taken to Bayfront, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

Deputies are investigating the crash.
