ST. PETERSBURG — Police are looking for a driver that hit and killed a pedestrian early Saturday, then fled the scene, but authorities have few details to work with.
St. Petersburg police do not know the make and model of the vehicle that struck Jeffrey Carl Remmel, 59, in 4400 block of 38th Avenue N just after midnight, or the identity of the person behind the wheel.
Though, police were looking for a large white or silver four-door sedan and a light-colored silver or gold minivan that were in the area at the time of the accident and whose occupants may have witnessed the crash.
Remmel was walking west on the north sidewalk of 38th Avenue N when he lost his balance and fell into oncoming traffic, police said. The unknown vehicle hit the man, then drove away.
Remmel died at the scene.
An investigation is ongoing. St. Petersburg police ask anyone with information about the crash to call (727) 893-7780.
