ST. PETERSBURG — A 19-year-old St. Petersburg man is in intensive care after authorities said the sedan he was riding in was struck by a hit-and-run driver in a stolen car early Wednesday morning, authorities said.
Shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday, a stolen 2008 Mercury Mountaineer hit a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu at the intersection of 15th Avenue S and 37th Street S, sending the smaller sedan crashing into a tree, according to St. Petersburg police. The driver of the Mountaineer reportedly ditched the SUV and fled on foot.
Police said the driver of the Malibu, Amelia Tumbling, 31, was taken to the hospital with injuries that weren't believed to be life-threatening. Trevon Thomas, 19, a passenger in the Malibu, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg; his injuries were deemed life-threatening.
