St. Petersburg mom accused of leaving autistic son home alone for most the day

ST. PETERSBURG — Police arrested a woman they said left her 10-year-old autistic son home alone for nearly 20 hours.

Renee Denise Scott, 45, of St. Petersburg, faces a charge of child neglect.

Police said Scott left her home late Tuesday night and did not take her son with her.

The boy wandered over to a neighbor's house at about 5 p.m. Wednesday, looking for food, said police spokesman Mike Puetz. He told the neighbor he'd missed school that day.

The neighbor became concerned and tried calling the boy's mother.

When that didn't work, Puetz said, the neighbor called the boy's father, who said he'd recently spoken with the boy's mother and she was scheduled to return within an hour.

The neighbor called police shortly after 6 p.m. with still no sign of the boy's mother, an arrest affidavit said.

Police and the boy's father arrived. The mother could not be located until Thursday afternoon, when she was arrested.

It is unclear what she was doing during the time she left the boy alone, Puetz said.

Scott remained in the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $2,000 bail Friday, records show.
