St. Petersburg police accuse man of suffocating woman

ST. PETERSBURG — A 55-year-old man suffocated a woman and then tried unsuccessfully to kill himself Sunday morning, police said.

St. Petersburg police received a call at 11:31 a.m. Sunday about a "suspicious circumstance" at 661 77th Ave. N in the Palmway Village Apartments. There, they found Albert F. Crandall and a woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crandall suffocated the woman, according to police, who did not release her name.

He had written a "murder-suicide note," police said. They did not explain how he tried to kill himself, but said he was treated and cleared at Bayfront Medical Center, then charged with first-degree murder.

Crandall had never before been charged with a violent crime in Florida, records show. The records show he pleaded no contest to a drunken driving charge in Tampa in 2010.
