St. Petersburg police investigate shooting outside Regions Bank

ST. PETERSBURG — A man trying to rob a woman at an ATM Friday night was shot by his own gun after a confrontation with the woman's boyfriend, police said.

Police were alerted about 9:10 p.m. that two men were struggling over a gun near the ATM at the Regions Bank at 8250 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N, police said. When officers arrived, they found a man on the ground and he had been shot. They also found handgun at scene.

Police said the boyfriend intervened when he saw the woman being robbed.

"The boyfriend struggled with the suspect over the gun, which eventually discharged, wounding the suspect in the upper body," said police spokeman Mike Puetz. The boyfriend took the gun and threw it on ground until police arrived.

The suspect was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, police said. He is listed in serious condition, but is expected to survive.
