St. Petersburg police hunting for hit-and-run driver who struck woman

ST. PETERSBURG — Police are searching for a driver who they say struck and killed a pedestrian Friday night.

Just after 7:30 p.m. Friday, Phelestine Larose Smith, 49, was walking east across 28th Street S near the alley between 4th and 5th Avenues S. Authorities say a small, four-door sedan was heading north on 28th Street in the curb lane and hit Smith. The driver then took off .

Smith was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where she died around 10 p.m.

St. Petersburg police are looking for the car, which they say may be silver and should have front-end and possibly windshield damage. Anyone with information on the incident can call police at 727-893-7780.
