ST. PETERSBURG — Downtown bicycle thefts have increased since the start of the year, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

More than 39 bikes have been stolen since Jan. 1. Investigators said most are high-end models secured by cable locks. Thieves simply snip the cables with bolt cutters, according to police.

Bike owners should use strong locks to help crack down on thefts, police said. Officers also asked that anyone who sees someone loitering suspiciously around bicycles downtown call police.
