Stolen car set on fire found floating in Hillsborough River

TAMPA — Police were investigating a stolen car that was set on fire and then ended up in the Hillsborough River.

Callers reported something on fire near the corner of N Boulevard and W Osbourne Avenue on Wednesday morning.

When officers arrived at the edge of the bank, they found a vehicle on fire, partially submerged in the river, said Tampa police spokeswoman Steve Hegarty said. They had it pulled from the river.

Officers checked the submerged vehicle's tag and discovered it was stolen. The dive team did not find anyone in or near the car, Hegarty said.

The incident remains under investigation.
