Student brought gun to school, police say

Police on Tuesday charged a 17-year-old student with bringing an unloaded gun into Largo High School. Largo police said it's not clear how River D. Smith obtained the weapon. He told investigators he brought it to school to prevent his mother from finding it at home. Police said they have no information to indicate that Smith intended to fire the weapon at school. The gun, a .22-caliber handgun, was found inside Smith's backpack, along with a clip of ammunition after school authorities received a tip about the weapon. Smith was charged with possession of a firearm on school property.
