TAMPA — A student used a steak knife to stab one of his classmates at Wharton High School on Thursday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

The stabbing sent the injured student to Tampa General Hospital, while the student wielding the knife was arrested at the school's New Tampa campus off Bruce B Downs Boulevard.

The incident took place about 2 p.m. The students, two boys ages 14 and 15, began to argue before a fight broke out, sheriff's officials said. During the fight, Angel DelMonte, 15, pulled a steak knife that he had hidden on himself, deputies said.

DelMonte stabbed the 14-year-old several times before dumping the knife in a trash can in a nearby boys bathroom, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies arrested DelMonte, who was taken to a juvenile detention center on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, tampering with evidence and possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Authorities had not yet determined late Thursday whether he would be charged as an adult. The 14-year-old did not suffer life-threatening wounds, sheriff's officials said.
